From “Why Can’t Girls Row?” to Changing a State: 35 Years of Girls’ Rowing at Loreto Normanhurst

From a simple question to a thriving sport, Loreto Normanhurst celebrates 35 years of inspiring young women this International Women’s Day.

As Australia marks International Women’s Day, Loreto Normanhurst is celebrating a milestone that helped reshape girls’ sport in New South Wales: 35 years since the school pioneered the state’s first girls’ rowing program.

Established in 1989, when rowing opportunities for schoolgirls in NSW were virtually non-existent, Loreto Normanhurst’s program began with a simple question from then-student Katrina Rowan: “Why can’t girls row too?” A casual remark that unintentionally highlighted a wider divide in opportunities for girls, it sparked a movement that would open doors for generations of young women.

Katrina’s question laid the foundation for a statewide legacy. With the support of her father, former rowing coach Michael Rowan, and a small group of determined students, the school’s first informal girls’ crew took shape in 1989, setting the stage for the thriving girls’ rowing program NSW enjoys today.

Today, more than 35 years on, girls’ rowing is firmly embedded across NSW, with more than 25 schools competing in major regattas and participation levels continuing to grow. Loreto Normanhurst’s rowing program now boasts more than 80 students, with demand increasing year on year.

Loreto Normanhurst Principal Marina Ugonotti said the anniversary is a powerful reminder of the school’s long-standing commitment to expanding opportunities for young women.

“Loreto Normanhurst has always believed in challenging limitations placed on girls and empowering them to lead with confidence, courage and conviction, on the water and beyond,” Marina said.

Beyond sporting success, rowing at Loreto Normanhurst has played a formative role in developing leadership, resilience and self-belief among students.

Poppy, co-Captain of Boats, says the impact rowing has had on her journey at Loreto Normanhurst has been immense.

“As I reflect on my time at Loreto, I realise that rowing has helped shape who I am. It has taught me resilience and the importance of teamwork. The joy of racing is like no other, but the friendships and the support we offer one another is what truly defines my experience. On this milestone anniversary, we honour the legacy of strong women who paved the way for us and will continue to inspire those who follow.”

Amelia, also co-Captain of Boats continues:

“Being part of Loreto's rowing program has offered me valuable lessons in perseverance and teamwork. The challenges we face together on the water has forged lifelong friendships and a deep sense of belonging. As we look back on 35 years of rowing at Loreto, I feel proud of the legacy we are building. We are more than athletes; we are role models helping young women see what is possible, inspiring them to lead, succeed, and believe in their own strength.”

Loreto Normanhurst Head of Rowing, Aidan Smith said the program’s impact extends far beyond competition.

“Rowing builds discipline, teamwork and perseverance. It’s a privilege to continue a legacy that has not only shaped our school community but has influenced girls’ sport across NSW,” he said.

The legacy of the program is deeply personal for the Rowan family, with Michael’s pioneering work passed down through generations. Today, his grandchildren, both girls and boys, continue to participate in the sport that began around a family dining table and on early morning training sessions.
